Landscape design – Lundo Alpine Garden – Sun house – Wooden houses – Naone – Undine Path – Tenno

Landscape design through conscious artistic design processes

What does this mean?
The various designs newly created in Lundo and Naone were not developed based on so-called gut feelings or sudden emotions, but are grounded in consciously developed and articulated form processes. This requires a clear vision and idea of what is to be created. The approach is therefore not personal; rather, the designer shapes an ideal concept.
The conscious design of, for example, an alpine garden is an active intellectual and creative process, in which the gardener first carefully considers, based on specific criteria, which idea or ideal they wish to realize—one that will ultimately be expressed and visible to the viewer, which plants harmonize together, and in what color composition they will be arranged.
During the implementation, the gardener experiences a sense of calm and centeredness, while maintaining a conscious relationship with the object. This intensely created connection to the alpine garden can subsequently be perceived by others when they observe it mindfully. The idea will manifest in subtle sensations that reach the attentive viewer, allowing it to be felt and experienced.

Lundo Alpine Garden

The white stones as a base make the various alpine flowers appear more vividly to the viewer. The individual flowers are well arranged, allowing them to be perceived in a differentiated way.

Arch-shaped designs around the Sun house

Arch-shaped, repeating forms create a sense of harmony and give the inward rectangular house not only a softer shape but also a focal point and a sense of centering.

Circular elements as design possibilities

Careful observation of circles brings the viewer closer to the principle of completeness through experience—a movement that has neither beginning nor end.

The connection of two wooden houses landscaped

The designed forms connect the two houses with each other.

Curved and tiered forms have a stimulating effect and spark the imagination.
An outdoor plunge pool invites visitors to consciously experience immersing themselves in the cold water and, upon exiting, to feel the subsequent rising warmth of the body. Experiencing this interplay has a beneficial effect on health.

Naone

In recent years, an ecological project has been initiated in a forest clearing in Naone, aiming to give all interested people the opportunity to further develop their creative potential and to experience themselves as responsible individuals, capable of generating uplifting forces for other people, for the environment, and for the animal and plant world. “In this way, humans understand themselves as designers who can elevate and promote nature and culture, and even create new forces.” (https://www.naone.it/en/the-project-idea/)
Naone, with the artist’s house of Barbara (Casa Artistica di Barbara), is located about a 20-minute walk above Lundo at approximately 1000 meters.
During the planning and consideration of how the different terrain forms could be designed, it became apparent that the expansive area could be perceptually divided into the four seasons.
In some places it is somewhat wetter, while in others it is very dry, cooler, or warmer.
The four seasons can be correspondingly assigned to these zones. The wetter areas with abundant fresh growth are located in the lower part of the property and can be associated with spring. In the upper part, however, it is drier, corresponding more to autumn.
The northern side, with its Jupiter plaza and three maple trees, is very sunny and can therefore represent summer, while the opposite southern part is much cooler and shadier, thus corresponding to winter. These different conditions are also reflected in the plants and trees that grow there.

The wildlife can also be well observed. In addition to the emerald lizards, which can be symbolically associated with their spiritual meaning of the “alertness of the day” (see video: https://youtu.be/PzObKc_Qbk0), many common lizards can be seen in the lower plunge pool, as well as toads and frogs, or newts in spring. Bears have even been sighted, and deer and stags visit the clearing, especially in winter, in search of food.

Undine Path

The Casa Artistica di Barbara can also be reached from the road via the Undinenweg. This path is dedicated to the element of water.
In popular folklore, undines are also known as water spirits. The term probably derives from the Latin ‘unda’ = wave or the French word ‘ondine’ = nymph. Paracelsus counted them among the nymphs. Undines belong to the nature spirits and, according to the founder of Anthroposophy, Rudolf Steiner, are considered elemental beings.
Rudolf Steiner describes elemental beings as entities that, unlike humans, do not possess a spirit, but consist only of body and soul. They have no ‘I’ and therefore no sense of responsibility. According to Steiner, undines have an intense life of perception and are related to our emotional life.
They live near bodies of water, lakes, streams, waterfalls—anywhere it is damp and where plants and minerals coexist. Heinz Grill notes that they also like to be found in the early morning dew on plants. Here, they have a particularly beneficial effect on the skin, which, after prolonged exposure in these zones, becomes softer and more supple. The moisture is especially healing and, among other effects, stimulates the human protein metabolism.
Undines can therefore also be discovered along the small trickling, channeled stream, the ‘Undinenweg’ in Naone. Late in the morning, the light begins to transform it into a sparkling and luminous watercourse, designed as a small waterfall with a miniature water basin.
Undines are beings that are constantly transforming. According to Rudolf Steiner, they dream their own existence and dream the dissolving and connecting of substances. For this reason, they are also referred to as the chemists of plant life and as world chemists. They dream of chemistry, and with their help, the plant develops leaf growth. Without them, the plant would wither as soon as it emerges from the earth and becomes visible to humans.

Tenno

A creatively designed garden in Tenno

This garden belongs to the Casa della Bellezza (House of Beauty), https://casa-della-bellezza-trentino.it/de/das-haus/

The garden is freely accessible and is divided into three terraces. Each terrace offers the visitor different perspectives and experiences, whether regarding the architectural design, the colors, … .

Criteria for aesthetic garden design according to the ideas of Heinz Grill include, for example:

  • It should be publicly accessible and provide a space for relaxation for the visitor.
  • In the garden design, not only the functional area should be enhanced, but this part should also be filled with life.
  • Nature should not only be perceived in its own way, as it blooms and thrives, but should be guided into a certain order and direction by the hand of humans. Through human intervention, nature can be led into a new and elevated connection. How humans intervene is a matter of imagination and creativity.
  • The garden should be designed so that people can consciously experience the forms. Conscious experience of forms through active sensory engagement leads to healthy emotional development and strengthens willpower.
  • The garden should be designed rhythmically, so that the visitor is stimulated in their sensory and mental life and can also leave something constructive behind.
  • It should be an inspiring, regenerating, and healing place for both humans and the elemental spirit of nature.
